LET's
TALK
A resource to reduce sexual stigma
What is sexual stigma?
Sexual stigma is the discomfort and taboo that surrounds sex-related topics like menstruation, reproduction, and sexual education. This stigma is experienced around the world, and it is perpetuated by a lack of understanding of sex-related issues. This resource will focus more specifically on sexual stigma in India, though the information is also applicable in other contexts.
Why is sexual stigma harmful?
Sexual stigma can cause the lack of education and discussion about sex-related topics that can greatly affect a person's sexual, physical, and mental health. If someone is uneducated about sex-related topics and their own body systems, they may not be able to identify issues and reach out. The fear and "disgrace" that is related to talking about sex leads to issues like sexual assault, the spread of STDs, not being able to embrace one's true identity, and too many more.
How can talking about sex help?
Whether it is basic reproductive anatomy, gender identity and sexual orientation, menstruation and puberty, or learning about safe sex, the discussion of sex-related topics in an educational setting can help replace this stigma with knowledge. That way, if an individual experiences a sex-related problem, they can reach out comfortably and get the help they need rather than be constrained by a societal stigma that hushes these issues.
How can this resource help?
This resource is meant to be an educational site where people from any situation can find well-researched information and further resources about sex and sex-related problems. There is information that ranges from basic sexual education to a deeper look into sex and society. The goal of this resource is exactly what it's titled: "Let's Talk." It is a place where sex-related topics are talked about completely freely, with no sense of taboo or judgement. Everyone deserves to be confident and safe, especially in regards to their own bodies and choices. With this education and by reinforcing the ideas that sexual topics are NOT taboo or inappropriate, we can all take part in dismantling sexual stigma. So, Let's Talk!
